CHAPTER FOURTEEN

After leaving the B&B and stopping by the police station to have my fingerprints taken, (sadly, without running into Jake) I squeezed past the pile of tables and chairs Gwen and Eli had stacked in the back foyer until I could decide what to do with them, climbed the stairs, and walked into my apartment. A niggle of guilt tugged at me that I'd pleaded exhaustion and only met up with Gwen and Eli long enough for Eli to unload his gaming stuff from my backseat, especially after they'd stayed until the glass guy had come and repaired the door, but I needed some down time.

I snuggled Patches close, scratching behind her ears.. I was beat and looking forward to relaxing and getting into bed since I wanted to open early tomorrow. I'd ordered extra rolls, bagels, and pastries in anticipation of a busy day. And if it didn't go that way, Eli's grandmother's poker group would have plenty of leftovers.

But the decision to leave the investigating to the police brought a certain level of comfort and calm. Hopefully, I'd be able to fall asleep. The last thing I needed was to open the café exhausted, especially with Eli coming in for a few hours to train.

After my shower, I stood in front of my dresser contemplating my next dilemma—no clean pj's. While I loved living on my own, the downside of my apartment was no washing machine. I had to go to my mother's to do laundry or spend a small fortune and hours I didn't have at the laundromat. Oh, well. I could probably get away with doing a few loads if I went to Sunday dinner next weekend. And since my mother had threatened me with blackballing if I didn't show up, it was noted boldly in my digital calendar.

I pulled out a pair of red and blue flannel pajama pants, with a tear across the left butt cheek where I'd gotten them caught on a nail, and a pink tank top. Fashion was the last thing on my mind as I donned the comfy pajamas and slid between the cool sheets of my daybed. With only the small reading lamp
